Philip Milanov, in the first world championship competition of his career, started off moderately with a first-round throw of 60.06m, putting him in 9th place among the twelve finalists, from which the top-8 after three rounds would gain three more throws. With his second round effort of 64.38m, Milanov moved to 3rd place behind Piotr Malachowski (67.40m) and Apostolos Parellos (64.55m). Then in the third round, Milanov unleashed his top throw of 66.90m, an improvement of his own Belgian record, to take over 2nd place. The subsequent three rounds never produced a throw that threatened Milanov’s silver medal position, as his own 6th round mark of 65.67m in fact was the best among any of the top-8 finalists in rounds 4-5-6. Joining Malachowski (gold – 67.40m) and Milanov (silver – 66.90m) on the podium was Robert Urbanek (bronze – 65.18m). His NR performance was Milanov’s fourth improvement of his own record, since he first claimed it in 2014 with a throw of 64.33m in Huelva (66.02m – ’14 Hengelo; 66.43m – ’15 Kessel-Lo; 66.66m – ’15 Leuven).
Also on 29-August, Isiah Koech and Albert Rop finished 8th (13:55.98) and 11th (14:00.12), respectively, in a slow and tactical 5000m final won by Mo Farah in 13:50.38.
In semi-finals action on 28-August, both Anne Zagre in the 100m Hurdles (12.88 – 3rd in section) and Pieter-Jan Hannes in the 1500m (3:44.38 – 8th in section) were eliminated from further competition.
