World Championships Beijing Day 3 – Saina 8th in 10000m Final

Betsy Saina, a three-time NCAA champion while representing Iowa State University (indoor 5000m, outdoor 10000m, and 6 km cross country), stayed in the front group throughout the 10000m final, which included her leading the race during lap 19 of the 25-lap race.  In a tight finish, Saina ultimately placed 8th in a season-best time of 31:51.35, just 10 seconds behind champion Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot (31:41.31), who captured her third world title in the event (2009 Berlin and 2011 Daegu).  Almensh Belete also competed in the 10000m, finishing 21st in 32:47.62.

All three personae-managed athletes entered in the women’s 3000m steeplechase heats advanced to the final.  Virginia Nyambura (9:28.50) and Gesa Krause (9:24.92) each finished 2nd in their respective heats to auto-qualify for the final.  Ruth Jebet finished 5th in her heat in 9:27.93, advancing to the final as a non-auto time qualifier.  Nyambura, Krause, and Jebet are currently ranked 3rd, 7th, and 11th on the 2015 women’s steeplechase world chart.  The steeplechase final will be held 26-August.

Finally, in the semi-final round of the women’s 400m Hurdles, Axelle Dauwens posted another season-best of 55.82, but her 5th place finish eliminated her from further competition.
