Krause claims first Diamond League victory in Rabat

Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athletisme, held 17. July in Rabat, Morocco, was the tenth of fourteen stops on the 2017 Diamond League circuit.  This meeting also served as the stage for Gesa Felicitas Krause‘s 17th attempt at capturing a Diamond League victory over a 7-year span.  In those past DL races, Krause’s best placing was 6th, achieved three times (’11 London; ’12 Oslo, and ’15 Monaco).  In the Rabat 3000m SC, pacing was provided by Krause’s Personae teammates Ann Gathoni (1000m in 3:06.05) and Caroline Tuigong Chepkurui (2000m in 6:16.95), setting up the final kilometer between Krause and her two remaining challengers, Noah Tanui and Rosefline Chepngetich.  Making her decisive move with a superior clearance over the final water jump, Krause covered the last 1000m segment in just over 3:01 to win in 9:18.87, ahead of Tanui (9:20.51) and Chepngetich (9:20.69).

 Krause’s time in Rabat was the fourth-fastest of her SC career, led by her German record and ’17 European list-leading time of 9:15.70 from earlier this season in Doha.  Other Personae-managed athletes with noteworthy performances in Rabat included Kipyegon Bett in the 800m (2nd in 1:44.28), Vincent Letting in the 1500m (4th in 3:37.96), Purity Kirui in the 3000m SC (5th in 9:25.55), Ferguson Rotich in the 800m (5th in 1:45.26), and Winfred Yavi in the 3000m SC (6th in 9:27.61).

In other recent action, Renee Eykens on 15. July won the gold medal in the 800m (2:04.73) at the European U-23 Championships in Bydgoszcz, while Philip Milanov at the Rasschaert Memorial in Ninove on 15. July won the discus competition with a throw of 66.34m, to establish a new career-best of having surpassed 66m in four different meetings in the same season.
