2025 World Championships Tokyo – Day 6: Masalela advances to the men’s 800m final and Maes advances to women’s High Jump final

Day 6 of the ’25 Track & Field World Championships in Tokyo saw sixteen Golazo-managed athletes in action, with two of them advancing to their event finals and five others advancing out of their opening round heats.

In the men’s 800m semi-finals, Tshepiso Masalela finished 4th in his section with a time of 1:43.80, the 6th fastest time among the 24 semi-finalists, which allowed him to advance to the final based on time.  Three other Golazo athletes competing in the 800m semi-final round were Kethobogile Haingura, 6th in 1:46.05; Eliott Crestan 8th in 1:44.56; and Nicholas Kiplangat Kebenei 8th in 1:49.54.

In the women’s high jump qualification round, Golazo newcomer Merel Maes cleared 188 cm to claim 12th place in a tie with four other jumpers and advancing to the high jump final.  Maes this summer won the Belgian national title with a jump of 197 cm, which ranks her in a tie for 8th in the world (7th in Europe) this season.

In the opening round of the women’s 800m, five of the eight Golazo athletes there advanced to the semi-final round, with heat results as follows: Tsige Duguma, 1st in 2:01.53; Mary Moraa, 2nd in 1:58.44; Oratile Nowe, 2nd in 2:00.09; Worknesh Mesele, 3rd in 1:58.46; and Sarah Moraa, 6th in 2:01.62 (was clipped and fell during the race, but was reinstated into the semi-final round).  Also competing in the 800m heats were Noelie Yarigo, 7th in 2:03.43; Nigist Getachew, 8th in 2:02.42; and Prudence Sekgodiso (dropped out of her race due to injury).

Other Golazo athletes competing on Day 6 included Imke Vervaet, 6th in her section of the 200m semi-finals (22.79); Elise Vanderelst, 11th in her heat of the 5000m (15:00.52); and Jana van Lent, 17th in her heat of the 5000m (15:14.93).
